Filippo Tincolini's Giant Astronaut Captivates Capri Amid Admiration and Debate

Roberto Russo, Corriere della Sera, August 24, 2024

In the heart of Capri's Piazzetta, an iconic symbol of the international jet set, a monumental sculpture of a four-meter-tall astronaut has drawn the attention of both residents and visitors. The work, created by the Carrara-based artist Filippo Tincolini, is part of the “Flowered Soul” project, a series that blends technology and nature in a contemporary and evocative dialogue.

The astronaut, titled “Spaceman Shine”, with its imposing form and intricate details, symbolizes the tension between human progress and the rediscovery of nature. The suit's surface, from which leaves and flowers emerge, represents the vitality of nature intertwining with human creations, merging two seemingly opposing worlds into a single artistic vision.

The sculpture's presence has not gone unnoticed: some have welcomed the novelty, describing it as a bold intervention of contemporary art in a setting traditionally tied to classicism. Others, however, have expressed reservations about placing such a modern work in the historical context of the Piazzetta. Nevertheless, the sculpture has received praise from Vittorio Sgarbi, Undersecretary of Culture, who described it as a work of great impact and cultural relevance.

With this installation, Filippo Tincolini offers a profound reflection on art’s ability to create connections between past and present, between nature and technological progress.

“Spaceman Shine” will remain on display throughout the summer, becoming one of the island’s most photographed and discussed works. The choice of Capri as the backdrop for the installation highlights the importance of dialogue between historical and contemporary art, and between humanity and nature.

A silent and contemplative astronaut, it seems to remind us that every step of human progress must remain deeply rooted in the earth from which it originates.
