Michelangelo’s lesson: disability shapes art thanks to marble scraps

Marco Gasperetti, Corriere della Sera, February 4, 2025
In the heart of the Apuan Alps, an area cherished by Michelangelo, a project has emerged that unites art and disability, transforming marble scraps into new expressive forms. Sculptor Filippo Tincolini, in collaboration with Anffas Massa Carrara, involves young participants in a journey of creativity and inclusion: fragments of discarded stone are gathered and, instead of carving away material, it is reassembled into works that propose a different notion of beauty. A Venus or a satyr come to life from what many consider waste. Thus, an innovative form of artistic rebirth emerges, aligning with Michelangelo’s vision of discerning creation already inherent in the stone.
This challenge is not merely sculptural but also human: these youths are not simply guided; they are accompanied in giving shape to their potential. It is a path of inclusion that, through material recycling, highlights the unbreakable bond between territory and creativity. The end result is an art born “from below,” resonating with a social message: “imperfect” matter can harbor the power of a new beginning.
